Content Management Systems

Different people have different views on what a CMS is or does. The term Content Management System was originally used for website publishing and management systems. Early content management systems were developed internally at organizations which were doing a lot of web publishing, such as on-line magazines, newspapers, and corporate newsletters.

As markets evolved, the scope of products promoted as content management systems greatly broadened, fragmenting the meaning of the term. From just a web focus, the term CMS began to expand and include within itself not just software but processes that facilitate the organization, control, and publication of a large body of documents and other content. In some cases the term began to be used interchangeably with other terms and concepts like Enterprise Content Management (ECM) and Document Management.
By using a CMS, content editors and the organizations they work for get a number of benefits. For example, they can:

  • Create and publish content in a standard format without needing to know HTML or other languages;
  • Co-ordinate the work of teams of authors and editors (e.g. by ensuring that only one person is editing any individual content item at any one time);
  • Control the branding and quality of content (e.g. by ensuring that the correct style sheets are applied, and that changes to the content are approved before they are published);
  • Reuse the same content item in multiple different sites and formats.

Knack works with a variety of Open Source CMS’s. Our implementations have included solutions built on Drupal, Pligg and Joomla. Open source development has brought a lot of advantages to organizations of all sizes by leveraging openness and collaboration of a world wide community of developers and contributors.
